How to Configure the Xbox Controller for FFXI

2010 - 2 - 1

Final Fantasy XI is an online massive multiplayer game, which features common Final Fantasy elements, with the reintroduction of the job system that allows you to train as a magician, a warrior and many other jobs. Unlike other Final Fantasies, this one does not include a pre-determined main character. Rather, you are allowed to create your own character and join other people to create a party and do quests. For the PC version of the game, you are normally forced to use the keyboard and mouse to move around. However, if you have an Xbox 360 controller, you can use that to make movements
Step 1 Plug the Xbox 360 controller into an available USB port on your computer. If you are using the wired controller, plug the other end into the USB port. If you are using a wireless controller, connect the charger to the controller, and plug the other end of the charger into the USB port.

Step 2 Download XBCD from the link in Resources.

Step 3 Go to "Device Manager" on the "Start" menu. Find and select "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows," right-click it, and click "Update Driver." From the new menu, select "Choose driver from list."

Step 4 Choose "Install from a list of specific location" from the Hardware Update Wizard. In the next menu select, "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install."

Step 5 Select XBCD as the driver. Windows will say that it is not sure if the driver is compatible with Windows; click "Continue Anyway."

Step 6 Open up XBCD from the control panel and select "Gamepad 1" from the drop-down menu at the top left.

Step 7 Download the XGI script, which will give the controller the appropriate button mapping, from XBCD 360 Guide (see Resources). The four files you need to download are:
Updated default Xbox 360 drivers profile
Default Xbox 360 config file with L and R triggers on Z axis
Default Xbox 360 config file with L and R triggers on separate axises
Default Xbox 360 config file with L and R triggers being 2 different digital buttons not triggers
Save these four files to "C:\Program Files\XBCD+"

Step 8 Select the file "triggersaredigital.xgi" and press "OK." The trigger buttons at the top of the Xbox controller will become active.

Step 9  Open Final Fantasy XI, and go to the configuration file. Click "Gamepad Settings" near the bottom of the file. You can also press "P" on your keyboard as a shortcut.

Step 10 Set up the button controls. You can set the button controls as you want, but if you want to emulate the Xbox version, use this configuration:
Select/Confirm: Button 1
Cancel: Button 2
Active Window/Window Options: Button 4
Main Menu: Button 3
Autorun: Button 5
Macro Palette (Ctrl): Button 11
Macro Palette (Alt): Button 12
Logout: Button 8
Hide Menus: Button 7
Heal/Lock Target: Button 9
Change View: Button 10
Take Screenshots: Button 6

Step 11 Click "Movement." Click "Camera" using the left and right analog stick on the Xbox 360 controller. Click "Menus" using the left analog stick and the D-Pad.

Step 12 Click "OK" to finish and run Final Fantasy XI.
