Step 1To play Final Fantasy XI Online first make sure you have signet cast you at all times. To get signet, talk to a particular gate guard. Most of them have 2 initals in their name such as W.W. or M.M or R.K. Have them cast signet on you before you leave to head out to battle. Signet will help you heal faster, causes the mobs to have more drops, and lets you gain conquest points that you can later cash in for items.

Step 2After you create your character you will start the game in your home location. The first thing you should do is get your character to level 10. (After getting signet.) In order to do that, you need to visit the Auction House and buy some basic items to battle with. You will only be able to wear Level 1 gear right now. After you have your gear and weapon of choice leave the town. The first region you come to will be where you will want to stay. You are too weak to fight mobs outside these areas. Check each mob before you battle it. Mobs that say "Easy Prey" are the best to go for. "Decent Challenge" may be too hard, which is the next step up, but occasionally can be done. If you die you will lose experience points and have to go back to your home point. Your home point can be saved at your Mog House (check your map) or any crystal that you see around town.

Step 3Understand skill levels. You need to know about this to properly play Final Fantasy XI Online. Your weapon and magic levels go up as you use them. Some spell levels will go up just by you standing and casting them on yourself or others. Your craft skills will go up when you complete certain crafts. Most crafts require many different crystals. Crystals are dropped by mobs (monsters) and can also be purchased through the Auction House. There is an Auction House in each major city. Fishing is the hardest to learn, but can later be financially beneficial. Remember, all skills require certain items at certain times, certain things cannot be made unless you are at certain levels, certain skills already acheived, etc. You can't just grab random bait and a random pole and catch fish in any old area. Step 4You cannot get a subjob, that looks like WHM/BLM or WAR/MNK, etc. until you are level 18 and you "fight the dragon". Which is a special mission that gives you your option to pick a subjob.
